The X-Altra MC/MM Phono preamplifier design was featured in a 2-part article in the prestigious US-based magazine ‘audioXpress’ in February and March 2021. It features industry-leading ultra-low noise and input overload (>31 dB) performance on both MC and MM inputs. On MM inputs, the 76.5 dB SNR unweighted with the cartridge connected is within 0.5 dB of the theoretical maximum, thanks to the all-active 2 x parallel JFET input stage, and a noise floor of -89.5 dBA with the input shorted. The MC input utilises a current injection topology amplifier stage, which realises the lowest spot noise in the industry at 232 pV/rt Hz.  RIAA conformance is better than +-0.15 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and still within 0.8 dB at 50 kHz. The X-Altra MC/MM provides comprehensive gain range and loading (MM) via DIP switches and also features a built-in rumble filter that can be switched by the user to ‘acoustic rumble’ mode via a rear panel switch. Further enhancing the ease of use, the PSU is integrated into the unit – kindly specify mains voltage at time of ordering – 120 or 240 VAC. The user can simultaneously connect an MC and an MM pickup (for example, on a dual pickup arm turntable) and select between the two via the ‘Input Select’ pushbutton located on the rear of the unit. The unit is housed in a solid aluminium case with a thick brass nameplate, as shown in the pictures. Each X-Altra MC/MM preamp comes with its own set of test measurements and test certificate. 5-year no-quibble warranty.
